CONTACT OUR TEAM
  • How do I know my child needs speech and language therapy?

A formal evaluation and clinical observations conducted by a certified Speech and Language Therapist can determine the need for speech and/or language therapy. If you suspect that your child may need speech therapy, call NJ STEPS to find out about a FREE screening to determine if a formal evaluation is necessary. However, the most critical time period for speech development is between one and three years of age.  Never wait to get help for your child if you suspect a problem.

You can visit our Developmental Milestones reference for more guidance.

  • Should I have my child's hearing tested?

If you find that you have to repeat yourself or talk loudly to get your child’s attention, or if your child’s speech is impaired, please visit your pediatric Ear Nose and Throat doctor to have your child’s hearing tested by a certified audiologist.

  • What to expect from a treatment session?

Once the evaluation is completed, a plan of care is developed based on the child’s specific delays.  The child will work on the specific targeted goals  during each session. Caregivers can observe the sessions and will always be brought back a few minutes before the end of the treatment to discuss the session and to be provided with activities to be carried over at home.  Any other therapist or educators involved with the child will be contacted (with the parents consent) to make sure every one is working towards the same goals.

  • How long will my child need speech therapy?

The length of therapy varies for each child. Therapy typically lasts approximately from 6 months to a few years. Goals and objectives are measured to determine progress throughout each session. The individual therapy session typically lasts from 30 minutes to 1 hour. The session length will be determined based on each child’s needs.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

There will be no charge for therapy if the cancellation is made within 24 hours of the therapy session.  For all “No-Shows” or last-minute cancellations, you will be charged $50.

  • What type of payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards, and cash. If you're using your insurance benefits that NJ Steps works with, we'll handle submitting your claims for you. You'll still need to pay any copays, coinsurance, or deductibles you owe. It's important to check with your insurance provider to understand what's covered at our office and what you might need to pay out of pocket. Understanding your insurance coverage helps you know your financial responsibilities upfront.

  • What insurance do you accept?

NJ Steps provides in-network benefits coverage for Aetna, Cigna, and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield patients; for all other patients, our services are out-of-network coverage. Please contact your insurance provider to review your benefits coverage. NJ Steps will provide invoices with appropriate coding and any necessary supporting documentation required by the insurance company.
